HUGE HAUL OF CASE PROPERTIES WORTH ABOUT RS.9.50 CRORES RECOVERED BY CHENNAI CITY POLICE AND HANDED OVER TO VICTIMS Commissioner of Police, Tr. S.George, IPS has repeatedly emphasised upon crime prevention measures and given instructions regarding “Zero tolerance toward crime incidents in Chennai City”. With regard to this a special drive was conducted by the special teams under the supervision of top brass of Chennai City Police. As a result in the past 4 months 504 property offenders were nabbed by the Chennai City Police and 2800 sovereigns of jewels and cash Rs.55 lakh were recovered. There has been a decrease in snatching cases compared to 2013. In the year 2013, 506 cases were reported but so far this year only 389 cases were reported showing a great decrease of 23%. This declining trend shown in reporting of snatching cases is mainly due to deployment of special patrol, anti-snatching teams deployed at vulnerable locations coupled with an upward trend seen in the crime investigation and detection of cases including arresting of criminals operating at Chennai. As for the important ones, in the Ayanavaram incident a vehicle number was identified with the help of CCTV footage and the special team nabbed the entire team of crime offenders from Madya Pradesh. For this case the special team covered Dawangare, Bhihar, Bhopal and arrested Moorthaja Ali, Sardaji Ali, Harshan Ali and Sunil Kumar and recovered properties. These notorious snatching offenders were detained under Goondas Act. Similarly as far as robberies are concerned, 74 were reported in 2013 and 64 in 2014 again showing a declining trend. During the year 2012 Chennai City Police had registered 2687 cases as against 2196 in 2013 and 1859 in 2014. There is therefore a reduction of 31% in crime cases. In 2013, 163 cases of murders were reported with 126 in 2014 showing a decline of 23% in reporting of murder cases. It is important to point out that there has been a reduction in incidents of murders which is mainly due to free registration of petitions and subsequent prompt field enquiries by the jurisdiction officers. It has helped in resolving petty issues having potential to develop into major law and order problems. Further, the notorious offenders are identified then and there and detained under Goondas Act. The reduction in crime in the city is also attributed to the detention of 1748 persons under Goondas Act as against 1601 in the corresponding year, 2013. Many of recovered items are quite valuable, and hold great sentimental value to those who lost them. The estimated value of the recovered property is about Rs. 9.50 Crores. The City Police Commissioner Tr. S. George, IPS commended the performance of Inspectors of police in detecting sensational cases within a short span of time and distributed certificates to them.
