HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION MEETS WITH THE MEMBERS OF THE WOMEN PARLIAMENTARY The members of Human Rights Committee of the European Union met with the members of WPC today in the Office of WPC, Parliament House Islamabad. The WPC delegation was headed by the Patron WPC and former Speaker National Assembly, Dr. Fehmida Mirza. In her welcome remarks she briefed the delegation regarding the achievements of WPC and women parliamentarians in contributing legislation on various important concerns of human rights and well as advocating the rights of women of Pakistan. The EU delegation headed by Ms. Ana Gomez (MEP) applauded the efforts of WPC in terms of legislating on various issues relating to Human Rights (women and children in particular) and stressed upon the need for more effective interaction between the two bodies to address the growing security concerns in the region for which the EU wishes to assist both monetarily as well as for capacity building. She also expressed her concern over the effective implementation of these laws while recognizing the limitations of the federation post devolution. The delegates were of the view that Pakistan being a very important country in the region needs to revisit its laws concerning right to free education for children and child labor. In response Dr. Mirza shared with the members regarding the steps taken by WPC and the government of Pakistan to address these concerns as well as informed them regarding the legislation that has been already been passed by both the Houses in the previous Parliament. While responding to another question by the EU ambassador to Pakistan, Mr. Lars Gunnar, she shared the progress of the domestic violence bill and that it will be tabled before the house after a consensus has been formed with all political parties. Other members of WPC from PTI, PML-N, JUI-F, JI and MQM present in the meeting stressed upon the need for EU to assist and support the provinces one step further and help in strengthening the local bodies, post election, in building infrastructure for educational institutions as part of encouraging children’s access to free education and curbing child labor. EU Delegation comprised of Ms. Ana Gomez (MEP), Mr. Andnej Grzyb (MEP) and Ambassador EU Delegation to Pakistan Mr. Lars- Gunnar Wigemark. WPC Delegation consisted of Dr. Fehmida Mirza (PPPP), Ms. Munnaza Hassan (PTI), Ms. Asiya Nasir (JUI-F), Ms. Tahira Aurangzeb and Ms. Ayesha Raza Farooq (PMLN), Ms. Saman Sultana Jaffery (MQM) and Ms. Aisha Syed (Jamat e Islamai).
