HUMBLE ME, A Novel Cecile’s side: I never used to be dumb. In fact, I was pretty smart when I was in school, brightest in my class. But, when a girl’s daddy ain’t around to keep the boys from sniffing around, she can get herself into trouble, especially if she don’t feel any love from her mama. A girl will replace her daddy’s love with anything or anyone, faster than two shakes of a cat’s tail, that’s for darn sure. I never knew what hit me the first time I laid my eyes on Raymond. That first day he was on his way to work, seemed to be in a hurry. I had seen him a few times already that summer, walking around town. He walked like he owned the whole street and it seemed every girl would stop in her tracks with hopes of getting a wink or a smile from him. That wink worked every time. I can attest to that. He was full of surprises too. He liked to catch me off-guard. I never knew what hit me a few months later when he bashed my head against the stove on his way out the door. I was left dazed and bloody, in a heap, my cheek flat against the cool linoleum floor. At the time I felt it was always my fault. “Why don’t you learn to keep your trap shut tight!” he’d scream at me. I learned fast that day when he kicked my side with his work boot to move me out of the way of the door. Raymond Edward Monroe was tall and dangerous. He was as wild as they made them in the southern parts of Louisiana. I should have kept my head down and hurried to get passed him that first day. Knowing what I know now, I should have run faster than the speed of light to escape that treacherous wink.
