HUNGER IN AMERICA In this months issue of the National - TopicsExpress

HUNGER IN AMERICA In this months issue of the National Geographic, there is an article about a growing percentage of the American population who are not even getting enough to eat. This is so weird. On this side of the world, we seem to be enjoying food and taking food for granted, while over there, the slow increase in wages coupled with the faster increase in food prices and other daily necessities means that there are more and more people who have to depend on soup kitchens and other helps just to feed themselves. I read the article with much astonishment. I also read the sad reality that the hungry in America are often obese. That may sound so strange, but its fact: the poor can only afford to eat junk food and highly processed food, which are low in nutritional value, but make you put on weight - even when you feel hungry. Another interesting observation is that US$10 is the same amount you can spend on both fast food as well as whole foods. But the poor usually go for the fast food option, simply because it doesnt take time to prepare. And they often dont have much time, because they are getting very low wages, so they have to spend longer hours working. It is an awful truth what you see in a developed country such as America.
