HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State scored four runs in the fifth inning Saturday, and held off the Lions, for a 5-3 Southland Conference win at Don Sanders Stadium. Southeastern (27-16, 12-8 Southland) scored first, pushing across a run in the fifth, but the Bearkats (29-14, 12-8 Southland) answered with four in their half of the inning. The Lions rebounded with a pair of runs in the sixth, cutting the deficit to one, but Sam Houston tacked on a single run in the bottom half of the inning to complete the scoring. Jacob Seward singled with two outs in the fifth and then stole second base. After Kennon Menard drew a walk, Jameson Fisher singled up the middle to drive in Seward for the first run of the game. In the sixth, Brett Hoffman drew a walk to lead off the inning. With one out, Sam Roberson singled up the middle. After Kevin Carr drew a two-out walk, Seward dropped a double inside the left-field line to drive in Hoffman and Roberson. Neither starting pitcher made it through the fifth inning. Reliever Nolan Gibbs (1-0) earned the win for the Bearkats, fanning six batters in 2.1 innings. Ryan Brinley picked up his fourth save of the season, working a scoreless ninth. Tate Scioneaux (6-4) suffered the loss. Sunday at 1 p.m., the Lions will send senior right-hander Sean Kennel (4-2, 3.61) to the mound against Bearkat righty Sam Odom (7-2, 2.32).
