HYDEN, Ky (WYMT) - On Friday, the Kentucky Department of Education released its annual report card for the states more than 150 school districts. At Leslie County High School, that was a reason for students had reason to celebrate.Principal Robert Roark tells WYMT they scored a 76.3 in terms of accountability. That means 94 percent of their kids are college and career ready.Five years ago, we were in the bottom five in the state and so for us to be a distinguished high school the last two years is a testament to our teachers and our students, said Roark.School administrators, like guidance counselor Mary Feltner, know they have come a long way. They credit a renewed focus to those test scores. We are a data driven school. So at any point and time, the students know where they are at and where they are headed and so do we, said Feltner.A few miles down the Hal Rogers Parkway at Clay County High School, staff are also celebrating progress. Principal Mike Gregory said their increasing accountability score shows they are on the right track.Last year we improved from 54.7 to 63, which is an increase of 9 points, said Gregory. While that only ranks them in the 29th percentile for Kentucky schools, the increase landed them with a High Progress label. Gregory hopes that will dispel rumors that schools in eastern Kentucky are simply not as good as those in other parts of the state. For some reason, you know, we are fighting stereotypes and things that people have drawn up about us and I just do not find it true about the students that I deal with here, said Gregory.Back in Hyden, Leslie County High School teacher Cynthia Collett agrees. Not only do we want to do well on these tests because it is a school thing, but we want you to do well for yourself and your future, said Collett. They said they are happy to have the scores finally reflect what they already knew.To see your school districts test scores, just click the link on the right side of the screen labeled state testing results.
