HYDERABAD: Buoyed by its victory in Aurangabad Central and Byculla seats in the Maharashtra assembly polls, MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday announced that the party would contest the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai also called as Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), one of the richest civic bodies in Asia. Addressing a gathering at the party headquarters in Darussalaam, Asaduddin said: In future we will contest BMC polls. We will also contest elections of municipalities in Maharashtra. The MIM would also work to increase its presence in West Bengal, Karnataka and Maharashtra, he added. Reiterating the need for a Muslim-Dalit alliance, Owaisi claimed that Maharashtra resonated with Jai meem, Jai Bhim, a reference to Muslims and Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. He said that the people of Maharashtra were caught between the devil and the deep sea and that with the advent of MIM in the state, the people have a credible voice and face. MIM legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi said that the party had to face challenges while campaigning as they were served notices under section 149 of the CrPc on more than one occasion. They would give us permission to address public meetings at the last minute. We couldnt campaign as much as we could have because of this, Akbaruddin said. He said that he considered winning two seats an achievement as the party had campaigned for just over a fortnight. Nobody can stop us now. We will raise issues and our voice, Asaduddin interjected. The party has stood second in three constituencies and third in nine constituencies. Many supporters were seen glued to new channels from early morning and joyous celebrations erupted once they heard about the two victories. Its a great day and we are distributing sweets everywhere, said a supporter.
