Hackers Claim Attacks on Electronic Arts, Valve Wall Street Journal (01/03/14) Sherr, Ian Separate groups of hackers attacked two video game companies, Electronic Arts (EA) and Valve, on Jan. 2. The companies run the Battlefield and Defense of the Ancients games, respectively, both of which have online components. Users of services for both games reported access and speed issues during the attack, and although service returned to normal by the morning of Jan. 3, it is unclear how long the attacks lasted. The lags appear to have been caused by separate distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. Cybersecurity experts are particularly concerned as this is the latest of a series of DDoS attacks. Others targeted the online photo messaging site SnapChat and the video messaging service Skype. The attacks do not appear to be connected. Twitter users under the names DerpTrolling and Script Kitty claimed responsibility for the attacks against EA and Valve, but those claims could not be confirmed.
