Hackers are spreading emails regarding Vietnam’s sovereignty - TopicsExpress

Hackers are spreading emails regarding Vietnam’s sovereignty over seas and islands with malware attachments to target victims during this time of high tension over an illegal drilling rig operated by China in the East Vietnam Sea, an Internet security expert warned Monday. Cybercriminals are taking advantage of the tension in the East Vietnam Sea to spread malicious software via emails, Ngo Tuan Anh, deputy chairman of Hanoi-based Internet security firm Bkav, said. Hackers are specifically targeting users of Google’s Gmail by sending them emails titled “Protecting airspace and waters in the defending of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam,” with a Microsoft Word document attached. The document is titled “an account by a naval commander of the protection of Vietnam’s waters and airspace.” “Kindly read and study this attached document,” the email reads. The attachment is actually malware that will infect victims’ computers once downloaded and executed, according to the Bkav expert. The malware enables cybercriminals to access victims’ data stored on their computers, such as their bank account numbers. It can even remotely control their computers without their knowledge, he warned. Anh advised that netizens exert caution when they receive emails from strangers that address recent news such as the tension in the East Vietnam Sea or the Malaysia Airlines plane crash in Ukraine. “They should also install or upgrade antivirus software as well as security patches,” he said. Beijing placed its drilling rig within Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf in the beginning of May despite vehement protests from Hanoi before moving it out of Vietnamese waters last week.
