Had a bit of a hiccup with Sam over the past two weeks. He was given his first AHS injection on the 1 November and coincidentally or not he suddenly started losing weight. From a horse with a good muscled topline and big round hindquarter, the muscle tone has fallen away. Nothing else changed and his worming, teeth and feed are the same. He still has a great shine on his coat and is his usual energetic boisterous self - just an inexplicable weight loss. I was really made aware of the weight loss when I lunged him last Friday and could actually see his ribs and spine again. He is by no means thin - but he has definitely dropped off. I immediately increased his oats intake, added extra Brews Yeast to his feed (although he is always on it) to increase food absorption and have made even more good quality lucerne available to him. In 5 days he is showing an improvement although the hollows in front of his hip bones need to fill out again as does his topline - but that will be work and conditioning over a few weeks. Am a bit concerned as the next Vacc is due on Monday - but i will ask for a different batch number just in case its related.
