Had a busy weekend, and a new adventure Sunday night. Saturday, corre foc (dimons running in the streets with fire) and a dance. Sunday, a casteller competition with my team (Al·lots de Llevant {East side kids}), Castellers de Mallorca, and a team from a part of France that used to belong to the kingdom of Mallorca, which we call Catalunya Nord. We hosted them at the beach and for lunch. What is new for me are the Falcons, which I had heard of but never seen. The following description is my paraphrase of an article about them in Wiki. Falcons are a gymnastic demonstration which begain in Catalonia at the beginning of the 20th century and has become a traditional sport in the Penedes region. In the performances the falconers create acrobatic structures, resembling those of the castellers, but with more varieties. Though the choregraphic elements and aesthetic effects are more important then those in the castells. Falcons are a varient of castellera as regards costume and the accompaniment with the gralla, often using the same repertoire and incorporates some of the same figures for example pillars Here in Mallorca, and generally in Catalunya, such activities are individual teams (Castellers, Geganters, ritual dancers, dimons, batucadas, etc. However in this case, a bedroom community of 5000 about 10k from Perpinyó, they are sort of all togathewr, rehearsing on different nights. So while our contact was a casteller competition, their visit (Saturday to Tuesday, includes some of their other events. So I went to see the actual falconer event later. Here is an example (more later, after I finish cleaning out my camera and editing).
