Had a fine evening Tuesday at John N Macleans talk down at Iowa Lakeside Lab. Were both teaching there this summer, John during the current session and me later in July. Johns public lecture during his stay was on Old Men and Fire, in which he discussed wildfire and the people who fight it...and also undertook several excursions into his father Normans work and outlook on life. This included some tasty anecdotes about the old mans prickly relationship with Robert Redford on the way to turning A River Runs Through It into a film. All of it was fascinating and brilliantly told. John also read from some new material hes working on about the 1953 Rattlesnake Fire that was breathtakingly good.
