Had a pretty badass idea earlier. Shadowbreaker is a prequel to ASCEND, set three-hundred years earlier. At the stage in which Shadowbreaker is, the Primitive is a troubling technological possibility on the horizon, not the workaday, dieaday, wakeuplateraday reality of the mortality-deprived paradise/hellscape (depending on your perspective) of ASCEND. This isnt gonna fundamentally change much about the story - its a decision that mostly affects me personally. Ive been mulling pretty heavily about a concerning problem - I have a habit of abandoning projects that have a similar-but-more-interesting cousin, then cannibalizing the dead project to enhance the survivor with some snazzy bits of freshly-dead-story. Shadowbreaker and ASCEND were about to get in one of those spats, with ASCEND the predestined victor. This is a problem because Ive done this my whole life, and Im sick of ditching projects; Ive decided that I want starting a story to be a commitment to an eventually-finished story down the line, working towards building a portfolio that an Agent could look at or something like that. So long story short, Ive been faffing about trying to figure out how to avoid scrapping Shadowbreaker before its finished, and by making it part of the ASCEND canon while still existing as its own novel, I may have solved that dilemma. Go me. *goes to bed*
