Had a very interesting experience while doing test firings of our new oval conversion kiln....My partner kiln builder, Jeff Martin, and I also make clay drums together. We sometimes use an android app on my phone that measures musical pitch (Da Tuner)....I was telling him how I use the nature of the sound of the burners as one of my firing tools....I said I listen to both the volume and the pitch of burner sound. He paused, considered, then asked, then why cant you use your tuner app to measure the level of output of the burners? We kind of laughed about what crazy idea that was, and, of course, started recording the pitch in Hz (hertz) every time we adjusted the burner output. Its too early to say, but it looks like if you measure the pitch from the same position relative to the burners, there is a measurable increase in pitch corresponding with an increase in output. wouldnt it be interesting if you could use this to help have a consistency of burner adjustment from firing to firing. I will post again when we have fired several times and added this information to our firing logs.
