Had an awkward moment at the new vets today.....one of those uh-oh moments on both sides. Vet tech came in with the lytes results - Na 146 (139-150), K 4.1 (3.4-4.9), Ratio 35.6 and said - Ok - lytes are WNL and well give the same dose. I looked at the lytes and said No. Vet tech looks embarrassed and gets vet and vet says When treating AD, when lytes are WNL, we give the same dose. Me That may be what the textbook says, but I want to see a ratio of 30-32 with the K at a specific point before he gets another dose and according to these results, Im going to wait until next Tues or Wed before he gets a reduced dose. Ive been managing his dosing based on precise values in his lytes and this is what I want to do. Pregnant pause - vet throws up her hands and says You know your dog best - Ill leave it up to you! It was quite awkward, but at least she didnt throw us out nor did she get angry with me for having a different opinion or argue with me. Wouldnt you know it - first time with a new vet and Valentino has to have lytes that indicated he needed a reduction!
