Had an early morning chapel service and I really got a taste for the heart of those within the school as I hadnt before. Each day that we have a meeting, a different student will come and lead the music, guitar, and singing in a very warm, pow-wow fashion. ^^ A different staff member will then lead announcements and devotionals. I was so impressed because a student comes to the podium before changes of speakers to invite them forward. Its really a powerful gesture of respect to see that humility. We had the uncomfortable topic of being ready for conflict and were introduced to the stories of issues in the past when violence came into play when the staff was in Northern India and there were a lot of conflicts. Nevertheless, the students were encouraged, much in MLK Jr. style, to hold their ground peacefully, without fighting, but also with the firm conviction that one should not be controlled and that one, if necessary, should be afforded self-defence in combat. We got into Nehemiah and the illustration of the mockery of the wall building as a parallel. I cant help but dwell on the freedoms we have elsewhere and how, even when that freedom isnt there, it will make us into something very new and bold nevertheless. It was a powerful service, for sure...^^
