Had an epiphany in a music seminar [today] titled, Music: the great equalizer and it revealed, to me, my plans for life post Morehouse, connecting so many dots in my mind, heart and soul. Frankly, Ive always worried about not knowing how the work that Im invested in [activism/community justice work, being a music major, childcare, education, etc] would intersect or not being able ruminate a plan immediately. Like: how in the hell I would connect my professional experience in childcare, work as a young, black, queer activist, and my growing passion for communications/new media/journalism to my being a music major? Well....heres what Im thinking of today: 1. Take a break before entering grad school. Use that break to invest time in a community fellowship or program abroad [or something local or national] to rejuvenate my spirits, and realign my focus and purpose for life. Think: PeaceCorps, potential fellowship with the Fellowship of Reconciliation for now]. 2. Pursue a Masters of Music Therapy at either Temple University, Loyola or Florida State University. And in my work, Im particularly interested in how folks respond to music in response to social issues [social justice work and healing surrounding it] in addition to working with children [and other folks] with multiple disabilities. 3. Work on some music! Yes! Music! Solo artistry is on the way. Think: Badu, Janelle, India, and Jill. My favorite womyn artists. In the spirit of faith, I am glad that these things are coming together. Your thoughts? Know anyone working in the area? Got any advice? Do share!
