Had an interesting discussion with my mom about the pretentiousness of poetry and what the Great Modern English Novel (James Joyces Ulysses) is, and how it should be enjoyed. Here are the results (or the opinions I have formulated by the end of the argument): 1. The simpler and more surreal a poem attempts to be, the more meaning is attributed to it. 2. When this is done in a small and surrealistic fashion, some poets, in attempting to be deep, lose their meaning in an attempt to make a poem an experience. 3. Ulysses is not the Great Modern English Novel it claims to be. According to the people we roped into talking about it, the only way to really Get Ulysses is to take a class on it. If that is the case (in my opinion) then it cannot be great. The Great Novel should be something that you can understand and form an opinion about without having to have someone explain it. Thoughts, anyone?
