Had an interesting week meeting and talking to business owners - TopicsExpress

Had an interesting week meeting and talking to business owners from different industries. The common theme with most was how to find time to keep employees focused and motivated as well as measuring performance and giving feedback. Most have very good intentions, providing clear position descriptions, detailing expectations, but falling short as employees are not given direct and regular feedback on how they are doing. The outcome is two fold; those that are not performing are never told and eventually when this non-performance can no longer be tolerated, the person is terminated. This often comes with time consuming visits to lawyers and the Fair Work Commission, with loss of credibility for the business. In addition, those that are performing, never receive the positive feedback they deserve and eventually move on. Scheduling regular meetings in diaries and having the discipline to have them is an excellent start. Having a conversation template to guide the conversation takes a lot of pressure off both parties.
