Had an open critique of my work yesterday at SAIC by Roberta Smith, who seemed to thoroughly dislike, even hate my installation of new paintings and sculptures. She started off by questing whether I was even an artist, insinuating perhaps I was a stage or opera designer. I know part of Roberta’s job is to make incendiary statements to get people riled up to take further action, at least according to the lecture she gave the night before. I just wanted a little more than a a fifteen minute rant for the art students made up of intoxicating blanket statements about the world. In any case, I’m using it as fodder to keep working! Who knows, maybe that’s secretly what Roberta wants and even if she doesnt its going to take a lot more to make me stop. As Roberts Smith stated, “Power is something given to you,” and that’s a power I am not giving her nor one that she is taking away from me. Now, off to the studio.
