Had me first visit to Thorne (stainforth and keadby canal) this Sunday it was 3rd Round I believe of the teams of 3 lee, Matt and tom run they luckily let you you fish these as an open 👍 there predominantly bloodworm and joker matches attracting anglers from all over the country as it one of the only places you can fish these baits now. The weather was terrible agian high winds but the lads pegged so must could fish half decent. I had a good draw 259 on the flats section Matt Godfrey had 16lb of roach the round previous so I was really looking forward to it,fishing the worm is something I really really enjoy I did a lot of this type of fishing in the past with a good record on the canal its a fairly straightforward attack and rigs the difficulty comes with feeding and gauging top ups etc but once you get it right it can be hectic and highly enjoyable sport. On getting set up comfy not the easiest on this part of canal here I wasnt going to do anything special on the rig front its not that type venue I simply setup 4 rigs a light, medium and heavy worm rigs (.4,.6,.8) floats these were all old rive Scotthorne 110 which are a pencil style float .12 main line Olivetti 2 10s droppers is also set up a hemp 4x14s hemp rig (wilky steady) that was strung bulk in bottom 3rd gamma greens were the hooks on all 3 rigs. Now deciding what to feed on here is the thing , some lads swear by feeding soil only others add gb I like to feed a bit groundbait so feed was 6 pints soil to 3 pints ground bait then its a case of deciding were to feed and how many lines not as complicated as it sounds generally I look for the bottom of near shelf and come back out the depth a foot and feed 2 lines there 10 and 2 o clock then I go across the canal and do exactly the same there just rotate the lines at the start untill the fish start feeding well them I cut 2 of the lines (1 short 1 long )when sport gets going and concentrate on the 2 lines catching on one line till it dies, top up it up go to other and so on well thats the plan anyway !! Match gets going everyone fed there lines and settled in expecting big things WELL thats not quite what happened 😳 few tiny perch were being caught but not the expected roach this can happen though it sometimes takes a while to get going so I wasnt too worried I could see Shaun ashby 2 to my right struggling as well and so I new Id not fed it wrong after 1.5 still just catching tony perch a bank walker came past saying it was much the same vein for the whole canal so I carried on I was starting to catch odd roach as well now so it was just a case of carrying on waiting for something to happen what I forgot to say was Id left me hemp at home I had a feeling this was gonna cost me with it fishing so hard a few late roach i the seed would be massive weight boost 😣 im afraid to say the fishing didnt get any better for any of others in the section for some reason the roach wouldnt feed the only person to have any roach was lad to my left he had a run on the hemp ( I new it would happen) 😡 but that was it he won the top section with modest 7lb 11 I didnt know what I had but luckily I managed to win my section with 5lb 9oz which was lowest winning weight on canal ! But its still a win I suppose it fished better further round with plenty 8/10lbs hopefully Ill draw amongst em this sunday :-)
