Had my South London accent mistaken for an Australian one. This - TopicsExpress

Had my South London accent mistaken for an Australian one. This has been happening more or less once or twice a week since I arrived here in Philly. The latest example occurred in a womens clothes shop while out and about with Stacy. As I was standing outside the changing rooms, the shop owner overheard me speaking and asked if I was from Australia so I decided to have a little fun. I looked around conspiratorially and said Yes, but please be aware of something. I beckoned the shop owner over. She walked across the shop and I lent in and said in a low voice. Im Australian Secret Service. I pointed to the stall where Stacy was trying on clothes. The Lady in the changing room is Dame Margot Ledbetter of Surbiton who is here in Philadelphia on a constitutional fact finding mission for the Australian government. I am her bodyguard. The shop owner looked at me suspiciously. I met her gaze her with a cold expression and said Even though this is her day off and she needs warm clothes for the harsh Australian winter, you cant trust those bloody British not to be keeping tabs on her. Yeah right. Said the shop owner, folding her arms. One thing; she has an American accent! I nodded in agreement Of course, wouldnt you after living here for 10 years in exile? Exile? She exclaimed. Indeed, after the failed coup of 2004. Stacy then emerged and took a grey sweater to the counter. The shop owner served Stacy, while all the time looking at, me as I prowled around the isles, eyeing the other customers suspiciously. As we left, I gave her a conspiratorial nod and thumbs up which she did not return and pretended to be busy with something on her counter. I get bored easily.
