Had one of those few and far between evenings last night; quality rainy drive talk with the wonderful and dear Lynda Kellerman, fireside vegan dinner, and two hours with David Sedaris! When we met him after his reading, he signed our books while stuffing his mouth with almonds. I awkwardly tried to shake his hand, but of course he would have none of that. In vain, we had suggested what we wanted him to write inside each book; he politely ignored those requests and signed what he wished. He seemed smitten with my kids, intrigued that they have been raised on his stories at bedtime... He wanted to know their ages and their favorite tales, so I shared 6-8 black men, Sakawura, the Halloween candy stuffing of mouth, the cough drop on the plane, and Ya Yas goldfish. He said he wanted me to give my kids something from him, so he rifled through his book bag and found....a nicely wrapped bar of fancy hotel soap. A perfect little offering as far as Im concerned. Soap from David Sedaris -- a few and far between evening.
