Had the best update so far - from the ward nurse who spoke in - TopicsExpress

Had the best update so far - from the ward nurse who spoke in plain English. He was settled overnight. He was off for his physiotherapy today. His vet is pleased with where he is at the moment. He has eaten and bit of tuna and some ham not much but he has not really been wanting to eat so they have been trying him on different bits of things He has been crying a little bit. he is ok when people with him. he is doing that in his kennel when left. Still no movement He still has a catheter and no bowl movement either. He has got some response to pain and will and shuffle around on his bottom but not using his legs at all . It can take time to regain control. She explained by telling me to imagine that - that the spine is like a hose pipe with two bricks squashing one bit and when the bricks (the ruptures) have been removed the disc which should be squashy goes hard - and its like a kink in the pipe. It will take time for the hardness to go and the bruising of the spinal cord and the inflammation to come down. Like having a dead leg. so its a waiting game and this is going to take time - you can never say how quickly as each dog is different some recover in days others weeks. He is having the physiotherapy at the movement to help keep him moving and keep the muscle in his back legs. He is in intravenous fluid and because of this and the catheter he can not go on the underwater treadmill at the moment. How long will he be in? He will be with them for the time being - defiantly over the weekend and probably well into next week depending on how he is doing. I explained that he does cry if he wants something and is persistent - she said she knows with a laugh. The vet is going to ring me this afternoon to explain further.
