Had this tune in my head all morning....more specifically, this - TopicsExpress

Had this tune in my head all morning....more specifically, this horn section break. Its funny, some of the things my addled brain can recall vividly. I remember the first time I played this song. Id gotten a call about working in a back-up band for Randy Richards at the soon-to-open Holiday Inn on 20th Street in Bham. It was the former Kahler Plaza location. I think Mike Matos was the one who called me at work at Dugans about the gig. Id recently been fired by Shelter, and I was itching to play. I was given a date and time to show up for rehearsal and directions to Mikes parents home in the Bluff Park area. When I arrived and set up my kit, I wasnt really sure if I was auditioning or if I had the gig. I had never worked with any of the other guys, but we all knew each other in that casual way that musicians all know each other. Wed all been in various bands that were regular acts at the infamous Als Cabaret. Most of the other guys, however, were alumni of the band Angelo Toad. Theyd all worked together. I was the outsider. The first tune called up was (at that time) a new tune from Paul Simon, Late In the Evening. I was immediately terrified. I didnt really know the song in the sense that I hadnt sat down and dissected the drum part, but I was familiar with it. I knew it was a sort of merengue/samba groove with a wicked drum part played by Steve Gadd. It was all over the radio, and I rather liked it. I figured what the hell, and dived in. When we finished, Mike looked and me with a smile and said, Tough guy, eh? If it was an audition, I knew I was in. youtube/watch?v=57RIlznOpDM
