Haile Selassie (1892 - 1975) was deposed as Emperor of Ethiopia 39 years ago in a military coup , ending his reign of more than half a century on the only African country that was never formally colonized . Despite his small stature , 5 feet 4 inches, Selassie was Napoleonic in stature both as resistance , was challenging him out of Ethiopia in the fascist occupation for five years during the Second World War, he was belligerent in its determination of a fuerta powerful united Africa and its diaspora . Selassie - heir to a dynasty that traced its origins to King Solomon , was denounced by critics as undemocratic , pampered leader who enjoyed the finer luxuries of life and who allegedly transferred thousands of millions of pounds of public funds to accounts private banking abroad. But his supporters argue instead that he was responsible for leading a largely illiterate country , rural , feudal , and dealt with 2,000 languages and dialects in the 20th century . God incarnate For followers of the Rastafari movement , he is a God incarnate. Most notable was the contribution of African Unity Selassie and the Pan African Movement . A fellow African who met the Emperor in 1972 during the sessions of the Security Council of the United Nations in Addis Ababa , surmised : . Haile Selassie is one of the worlds great men . He did a lot for his country and soon became a respected voice for Africa and the Third World. In fact , in 1935 , was named the Man of the Year by Time Magazine . Ras Habte Wold , from West Midlands , representing a research group Rastafari , spoke of the impact of the emperor in Africa. He said : He modernized Ethiopia and cleared from the Middle Ages to the modern world. Their efforts were those that led to Ethiopia to join the League of Nations in September 1923. He , through The Power of the Holy Trinity [ translation of Haile Selassie Amharic language ] was the liberation shone for blacks around the world inspired to also throw off the yoke of bondage and oppression , managing to introduce ourselves as free men. This light shining between his own African people also lit up the lives of all peoples, languages , colors and nations. The Emperor is called The Father of Africa because of his work to bring unity among African countries that had disputes , being a founding member of the OAU ( Organization of African Unity ) , and then devoted himself to defend world peace , expanding vision throughout the world. First universities in Ethiopia Selassie was who established one of the first universities in Ethiopia, now known as the University of Addis Ababa , where he taught political economy and law, among other subjects , and it allowed him to study the Ethiopian army to learn the sophisticated training techniques of their great allies such as the United States, teachings that were later used against the military coup of 1974 . His ideology of pan- Africanism was influential in the world , this may be reflected in the civil rights movement in the U.S. and South Africa. This ideology is based on the belief that unity is vital for the economic , social and political and aims to unify and elevate people of African descent. Along with other major thinkers as Kwame Nkrumah and Jomo Kenyatta , Selassie s influence was important in the creation of the African Union ( AU) in 2001 , which consists of all African states except Morocco - becoming so , in the largest pan-African organization and influential in the world. With the economic growth of Africas largest countries , such as Angola , Ghana and Nigeria to about four percent , the AU is in a particularly strategic position , both politically and geographically . Therefore, the AU can play an important role in the intermediation of the important decisions for his people and abroad . Toyin Agbetu , founder of the Pan- African human rights called Ligali , argued that the unification of African people is more urgent within governments and local communities : The unification of Africa has been going on for many years to a commercial level , with people freely buy and sell products from different countries - . Sharing their experiences , language and customs from other places , but there is a lack of standardization in the political and economic spheres , as a living legacy that focuses on the way of how Africa was divided by colonial powers . The African Union has great potential to improve the situation of the continent. He still has work to do , however. In the past, the AU has been used as a discussion forum for politicians, while there are people who are doing a great job under the radar , which is not news. However, Agbetu adds that educating people is needed to promote greater cooperation among African nations . People can create that change. We can not wait for others to decide our future. We all have to embrace the political culture and create leaders who can achieve the change we want . Until now , many African countries have struggled to translate their personal relationships institutionally .
