Hair Horror Tuesday, August 13, 2013 No matter how many salon treatments you indulge in, does your hair never look healthy and luscious? Priyanka Singh thinks that maybe it’s time to give your hair a break Have you ever wondered why we see so many salons opening up in the city every other week? And despite the availability of countless evolved treatments, our hair problems keep increasing and we’re never satisfied with how it looks. Dwell upon it a little more and you may realise that the chemical treatments that you undergo in order to chase a photoshopped mane, might be the reason behind your hair problems. There are many salon treatments that can harm your hair in the long run and only provide you with temporary gorgeous hair. We list the top offenders. Bleaching Bleaching your hair penetrates the cuticle with chemicals and removes your natural pigment. Once you bleach, you alter the strength of your hair, making it weaker. If you blow dry and style on top of bleaching, you damage your hair even further, increasing breakage, dullness and split ends. Perming Perming is a term used for either a straightening or curling procedure done with the help of chemicals. The perming process breaks the inner bonds of the hair and then brings them back together in a different way which is harmful because it isn’t natural. It has effects similar to bleaching your hair. Over a period of time, it makes your hair dull and in many cases irreparable. So, instead of gorgeous curls and shiny straight hair, you are eventually left with brittle and dry hair. Highlights & colouring Highlights and colour dyes may not be as damaging as bleaching, but they sure have damaging effects on your hair. Most highlights and dyes need to be touched up after about three weeks. And if you keep doing this repeatedly, expect your hair to turn dry, brittle and lifeless. The side-effects will be more substantial if you colour the roots of your hair in order to hide the salt and pepper effect. Flat iron & blow-drying Many women have flat irons and blow dryers at home and use them every day in order to manage their hair. But, the heat generated from this type of equipment causes a change in the hydrogen bonds that hold hair together. Constant use of it will degrade the natural texture of your hair. While using this on your hair might make it look better for some time, frequent use will deteriorate your hair quality so much that after some time even using it will not make your hair look any better. Tight braids A lot of women braid their hair tightly in order to get the wavy look. Constantly repeating this pattern will make your scalp hurt, make your hair weak and cause your hair to break easily. Tight braids also result in headaches if worn for a long duration. Extensions & weaves Extensions and weaves have a similar effect as a tight braid has on your hair, but only at a more damaging level as it is done at the root level. If after extensions or weaves your scalp aches it means that you are causing your hair roots a lot of pressure and disrupting blood flow, which leads to the weakening of your hair and ultimately, hair loss. In fact, Traction Alopecia is a serious hair loss condition caused by wearing tight hairstyles such as extensions for too long. Over-shampooing The role of shampoo is to clean your scalp and remove oil and dirt from your hair. But over-shampooing your locks will rob your hair of its natural moisture because of the chemicals it contains. So, steer clear of too much shampooing and over-washing of your hair.
