Hair fall is a major problem encountered these days by men and women of all ages. According to dermatologists, hair loss of 50-100 strands daily is absolutely normal, while excessive hair fall can lead to bald patches on the scalp. Excessive hair fall may be attributed to a variety of causes, ranging from poor dietary habits, unhealthy lifestyle, heredity, deficiency of certain nutrients, hormonal changes to stress and fatigue. Factors such as lack of scalp hygiene, overuse of harsh hair care products and regular styling treatments may also be responsible for hair loss. Dermatological treatment and expensive hair care products may not only take a toll on your pocket, but also can have many side effects. There are a number of home remedies that can help reduce hair fall. Some of these are listed below: Coconut milk and oil, both act as natural hair tonics, as they are rich in fats and minerals, which strengthen hair roots. Regular massage with warm coconut oil can curb hair loss. You can also make a concoction of coconut oil with amla oil in equal quantities, and use it for massage. Similarly, coconut milk, obtained by squeezing fresh grated coconut, can be applied to bald patches, left overnight and rinsed in the morning, to promote hair growth. Amla (Indian Gooseberry) has potent anti-oxidants and vitamin C , which are beneficial for hair as well as general body health. You can crush amla to extract the juice and mix 2 teaspoons of this juice with an equal quantity of lemon juice. Apply this mixture to the scalp and allow it to dry. Rinse it off with warm water. Alternatively, you can make this mixture using dry amla powder, which is readily available in the market. Egg is another wonderful natural hair care product. Apply a mixture of one egg white and a teaspoon of olive oil to the scalp for 15-20 minutes, and then wash hair with warm water. Sulphur, an active ingredient found in eggs, helps strengthen hair roots and prevents breakage of hair. Fenugreek (methi) seeds are ground into a fine paste by adding some water. A cup of fenugreek seeds soaked overnight is used for this purpose. Application of this paste to scalp for half an hour followed by a shower with lukewarm water is an excellent home remedy for hair fall. Onion juice is another magical hair fall treatment. In addition to these home remedies, some simple tips can be followed to reduce hair fall. A balanced diet coupled with hair and scalp hygiene is the first step towards healthy hair. Drink lots of water, avoid junk food and carbonated drinks, and get plenty of restful sleep. Use mild hair-care products and avoid harsh chemical hair dyes, oils and shampoos. Do not comb wet hair as it leads to hair breakage. Avoid using very hot water to wash hair and frequent hair styling that involves use of heat and chemicals. Regular massage and protection of hair from direct sunlight are other factors to promote a healthy scalp without hair loss.
