Hairy Diary this week, a treat for my relaxed friends! Its been a long time since I ventured to offer advice to persons who chose to chemically process their hair. The truth is, since I am natural and have very limited contact with persons who are relaxed then its not something I deal with on a day to day basis. Also a lot of the advice that I give to naturals can be used for relaxed hair. The only thing I would advise relaxed people to stay away from are hair puddings and heavy products (you need to have really coarse strands to even consider this) and stay away from twist outs (dont do it, please). In the past I have tried to give advice while making allowances for different responses that different hair types might have. I as a result I feel like my hair advice has not been as effective as it might have been. Previously I made a suggestion that persons who relax should consider texlaxing. I take that back, somewhat. There are special circumstances when you should texlax, and others when you should straight relax. It goes as follows.... When to texlax: You are type 3 When to relax: When you are type 4 It really is that simple. Now I realise a lot of persons are not sure whether they have type 3 or 4 hair. Let me draw your attention to my posts save in the Notes section as a hair typing epiphany. The short cut is, if when your hair is wet your hair looks smooth and shiny then you are type 3. If when you come out of the shower, the wet hair only looks smooth if you pull it, youre type 4 and should be relaxing. The size of your curls/coils do not matter at all in this. Once you determine this then you will either texlax or relax. If you texlax you will be applying the relaxer and washing out soon afterwards so that your hair doesnt process all the way. When you wet your hair ir will curl back, and you will need to blow dry or rollerset to get the hair completely straight. This will allow you to maintain the body and movement in your hair, without it becoming flat and lifeless. With type 4, you use the relaxer formulated for your hair (fine/coarse based on strand size). Relax it properly the first time and make sure your old hair is never processed again! For all you self relaxers, I have a video (below) that shows you a way to do this. Because your hair is already bone straight, there should be no need for heat on your hair. Once your hair starts growing out, you may blow dry/ flat iron up to once per month to keep it straight, or rollerset after washing to manage your new growth. This is the first step to healthier, and thus longer hair.
