Halloween night in the cul de sac. Neighbor left for party in his pick up. Looked out at dusky dark to see the front door standing partially open and the wifes car in the driveway. Thinking she had forgotten something I didnt think much of it until much later I noticed it was still open. Just then a police car pulled into the cul de sac. I ran to the front and asked if he was there for that house and he said he had been called for the house on the corner but the door on that house was closed. I told him I didnt think anyone was home at this house and the door had been open for at least an hour probably more. Another police car drove up and they went into the house to check it out. The neighbor on the corner came out and told me her door had been left open too and friends had called 911 but they had just failed to get the door shut good. The policemen came out said the house looked fine and asked me to call owners. I got the neighbor on the phone and tried to explain that his front door was open and by that time we had three police cars and three policemen in the street. Neighbor kept asking me what was that? What are you saying? I dont understand, what happened? After repeating myself over and over I finally asked if he was sober! Policeman said, oh God! Neighbor assured me he was sober so I put him on the phone with the policeman and let the cop do the explaining. About that time a black lab pit dog joined us. Now I must explain that our neighborhood is loaded with big black dogs. This particular neighbor has two and one is unpredictable and territorial and can scale the fence with no problem. By this time all the neighbors are out and we are all staying clear of the dog until she seems really in need of human comfort. After a lot of calling the dog by name and telling her to go home the neighbor with three black dogs and one of the policemen got her to go through the gate into the backyard. Owner of house decided that he probably left the door open in his hurry to get kids loaded and off to a party. Police left and neighbors wife came home. While I was talking to her I heard the neighbor with three dogs whistling at his front porch. He was looking for one of his dogs. A black lab mix. I asked if she had a chain collar on and he said yes. I informed him that his wife and the policeman put his dog into the neighbors back yard. Poor dog was terribly confused and oh so glad to get out of the wrong yard and into her own house! I only hope we havent traumatized her for life. Just another Halloween night in the cul de sac.
