Hammerite Rust Cap Paints **Now available at the Tool Box** HAMMERITE® RUST CAP® HAMMERED ENAMEL FINISH is a self-priming, rust preventive coating designed to provide long-lasting metal protection. It provides a decorative finish that resists corrosion and the damaging effects from moisture and severe weather. Formulated for interior and exterior use. Glassguard® Protection As the coating dries, microscopic heat-hardened glass flakes interlock with special resins forming a super-tough barrier that seals out moisture to prevent rusting. Where to Use For use on metal substrates. Can be applied directly over firm, rusty surfaces. For previously painted surfaces, apply HAMMERITE® RUST CAP® HAMMERED ENAMEL FINISH to a small area first to check adhesion and test for lifting or cracking. Surface Preparation† Prepare surface by removing dirt, grease, wax, moisture, rust, loose paint and any other contamination that can affect the coatings adhesion. If washing is necessary, use a non-soapy detergent or TSP substitute. Rinse well and allow to dry. Scrape off loose paint and rust with a wire brush. Scuff sand rusted, glossy or hard surfaces.† Priming Aluminum and galvanized surfaces require a prime coat of HAMMERITE® RUST CAP® GALVANIZED & ALUMINUM PRIMER. Application Eye protection is recommended. Do not thin. Use in a well-ventilated area when temperature is between 60°F and 80°F and humidity is below 60% to ensure proper drying. Mix paint thoroughly before and during application. Always maintain a wet edge, but avoid over-brushing and/or rolling. Apply 2 or more coats as needed to achieve the 4 mil dry film thickness. Recoat after the first coat has dried to the touch (30-45 minutes). Use a high quality ¼” nap Mohair cover on smooth surfaces. A quality synthetic bristle brush can also be used. Airless Spray: Use .017-.021 tip size at approximately 1800-2600 psi Conventional Spray: Use 70-80 thousandths tip size, pot pressure 15-20 psi and atomizing pressure 25-35 psi. Dry Time & Coverage Each additional coat must be applied within 4 hours or after 14 days of drying. Dries to the touch in 90 minutes. Coverage is approximately 200 sq. ft. per gallon depending on the method of application, porosity and texture of the surface (to achieve a 4 mil dry film thickness). Clean Up & Disposal Clean all tools, equipment and paint spatters with Xylene or lacquer thinner. If spilled, contain material and remove with an inert absorbent. Aerosol Application Use outdoors, or in a well-ventilated area when temperature is between 60°F and 80°F and humidity is below 60% to ensure proper drying. Avoid spraying in very windy or dusty conditions. Shake can vigorously for 2 minutes after mixing ball begins to rattle and often during use. Hold can upright, moving from side-to-side while spraying lightly and evenly about 12” from area being painted. Ensure corners, edges and heavily pitted areas are adequately covered. Apply 3 or more light coats allowing 10 to 15 minutes between coats. Aerosol Dry Time & Coverage Dries in 15 minutes or less. Handle after one hour. Recoat should be done within 1 hour or after 10 days. A 4 mil coating cures in 14 days. Coverage up to 18 sq. ft. Aerosol Clean Up & Disposal Clear spray valve immediately after use by turning can upside down and spraying until only clear gas is released. If spray nozzle becomes clogged, remove and clean with mineral spirits. Gently replace spray button with a twisting motion, with top of can and valve opening pointed away from you.
