Hammond & Associates work with many charities East Street being one of many here is what they do: East Street Arts (ESA) is a contemporary arts organisation in Leeds that was founded 20 years ago. ESA is guaranteed and a Registered Charity, whose work now extends throughout Yorkshire, the North East and the East of England, with activity that involves national and international projects. INSITU PROJECT Initiated by East Street Arts, supported by Hammond Associates, In Situ is a national partnership project programming and linking a range of art organisations, artist collectives and artists in order to create new opportunities and to animate meanwhile spaces across England. The project aims to offer opportunities for artists’ projects in non-art spaces and at the same time showcase empty properties to potential tenants to help it be re-let. In Situ is based on the idea of ‘pop-up shop’ schemes, however it works in a unique inter-regional partnership model, which will enables the project to become a new national brand with visibility outside the properties’ immediate locality. The type of spaces available ranges from offices (grade A down to those due for refurbishment), warehouses, retail units and the occasional bar / nightclub. Most such arrangements operate under a two week notice period. CURRENT POSITION ESA currently operate 50 leases enabling them to offer 100 studio and 20 project (time limited) spaces in Gateshead, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Bridlington, Leeds, York, Halifax, Wakefield, Barnsley, Doncaster, Birmingham, Stoke, Burton on Trent and Stevenage. We have a constant flow of expressions of interest from artists eager to work in temporary spaces. In the past year they have held over 20 exhibitions and events, 20 workshops, talks / debates, and facilitated over 100 time limited projects in temporary spaces. Thye have been quoted as the ‘masters of meanwhile’ in Leeds in a report on the use of empty spaces and were recently cited on BBC Breakfast by Dan Thompson. Oak House, Leeds -Level 2 is an open plan grade A office that hosted fortnightly meetings of Leeds Writers, Actors and Filmmakers, Life Drawing Classes, rehearsals by Northern Creative & Urban Sprawl, student productions and a photography exhibition by Leeds City College. Level 3 has 8 enclosed offices that are being used as affordable artist studios. The studios are currently full and are able to support the work of students (eg. myspace/kasia.breska), recent graduates and more established Leeds based art collectives such as Woolgather (woolgatherartprize/), the West Yorkshire Theatre Network (wytn.co.uk/) and Lisa Stansbie –(lisastansbie.org/#481262/-works). Oak House was featured in the BBC’s Inside Out programme investigating questionable use of empty premises. East Street Arts was featured in contrast as the positive example of a charity that was making proper use of temporary tenancy opportunities for public benefit . Progress House in Stanningley, Leeds. Is an office floor chnagd into a centre for artists practice – ranging from visual art to music production. It took a while to get off the ground, but they are now well into the second year providing much needed workspace to 15 individual artists. The ‘Northern Light’, Leeds – a former night-club, last summer became a focus for a national art competition curated by the ‘Woolgather’ collective and showcased the work of 25 young artists and attracted 3,000 visitors. This was followed by use as Performance Art project space, with ten significant events hosted by the ‘Live Art Bistro’ In Gateshead,ESA have a former large retail space, now housing projects being developed by 18 artists and groups. These were formerly housed by Gateshead Council in a facility that the Council had to close for funding reasons. They are extremely pleased with the temporary space project that ESA have undertaken there. They also have 22 artists based in a redundant office building in Middlesbrough, which now also houses a professional/skills development programme and has hosted public facing shows of work. This gives a taste of the things Hammond & Associates can arrange and facilitate.
