Hand gun licenses are one of the few acceptable forms of id under the recent wave of voter suppression laws. Their access is apparently impacted by notable racial bias. A lawsuit has been filed by a group of rejected Black applicants (who have no criminal histories) in Illinois demanding transparency on the reasons for denial.. From Prof. Harel Shapira: ...Based on Texas-wide data we acquired from the Department of Public Safety for the years 2010-2013, a period during which a total of 590,042 people applied for a concealed handgun license, we found that black men are 2.79 times more likely to be denied a license than white men, and that black women are 4.74 times more likely to be denied one than white women. Such racial disparity is not unique to Texas. In Indiana, where 321,475 people applied for a concealed handgun license during this same time period, black men are 5.54 times more likely to be denied a license than white men, while black women are 7.26 times more likely to be denied one than white women. Whether we are talking about Texas or Indiana, if you are black, you are significantly less likely to be issued this form of identification...
