Handicap was born of the recreational competitive environment as a - TopicsExpress

Handicap was born of the recreational competitive environment as a marketing and promotional strategy to increase overall participation by allowing the marginal, less-skilled player a chance to compete on a similar level with the polished, practiced player. It is an overt entitlement because there is no attempt to hide the fact that it is an entitlement. We can see, touch, feel, add and subtract it. But there are covert entitlements too, born of the recreational competitive environment as a marketing and promotional strategy to increase overall participation by allowing the marginal, less-skilled player a chance to compete on a similar level with the polished, practiced player. The major covert entitlements are dynamically imbalanced equipment with porous coverstocks and high volume lane conditions that steer the ball down the lane. There are no differences between the awarding of a covert or overt entitlement. They perform the exact same function. They were born of the exact same environment- an environment different then that of the purely competitive. If we recognize how out of place handicap is in the purely competitive environment then too we should show the same level of concern with dynamically imbalanced equipment, porous coverstocks and high volume lane conditions. They have no place in the purely competitive environment.
