Handsome Douglas needs an owner who can manage his resource - TopicsExpress

Handsome Douglas needs an owner who can manage his resource guarding, and he only has tonight to find them. Read his volunteers comments and help him tonight ti you can! Douglas came to us as a stray. Well built and healthy looking, it is clear that he had an owner or caretaker, may be just minutes or hours before he was found by a good Samaritan who could not keep him, qualifying him as unpredictable. I saw him come in, strangely looking like another Rottweiler mix we had and who could just have been his much older sister...Douglas was most likely totally taken aback by this turn of events. He was growly in his kennel, discouraging people to take him out for a walk. Leashed, he would walk quite fast and pulled. A strong dog who would not care so much to interact with people or other dogs. Douglas is now sick with a cold. He has slowed down tremendously. A soft growl welcomes me but I know the routine with Douglas. I talk to him, give him a little treat and off we go. He still has an appetite. As usual, he likes to pick with his paw and mouth a large slice of roastbeef, then we go for a little walk followed by a little rest on the bench. Douglas sits now on command for me and I pet him without problem. Can I say that I know Douglas? Not at all...I know that he majorly guarded his food and toy and rawhide during his shelters behavioral evaluation, like many although not all Rottweilers do. He is grumpy and unhappy but given more time, I bet that there is more than meets the eye...I feel for that big beast who might growl at first at me but looks at me with big sad eyes if I just sit in front of him and tell him a story...
