Hank Skalka Those here that think that Jeff is in some way slamming Jaco are missing the point. That Jaco composed many of his solos rather than improvised them is no secret. The truth is the truth and, imo, it in no way diminishes Jaco or his legacy. It is simply the truth and, it you are smart enough to grasp it, a lesson. Jeff answered: Thank you for seeing this Hank. Bass players function as a cult. As cult members, the leader is unquestioned in any way, the leader in this case being Jaco. Any reference to the human element of their talent, or the dismissal of myths regarding their talent is a crime to many because it destroys their mythic beliefs and makes much more human the musical talents that they listen to. Isnt this what music is supposed to be, a human experience?. It is the same way that bass cultists cannot imagine that bass icons have lowered music education. Fans simply cannot imagine that their favorite teacher/player might have compromised music education, or that certain schools or methods of learning are flawed. These things are inconceivable to those that view their fave players as cult members view their infallable heros. Bass players are compromising bass music, not their icons. Open your hearts to the Truth about what you believe and who you believe in because the Truth doesnt take away the value of someone or something valuable. It simply makes the God-like belief in these people (something that you, the fans are doing) revert to something real, human, and possibly even more satisfying when listening to them play when you realize that a flawed human being used their musical skills to the fullest to provide great music for people to listen to. .
