Hansel, the mini doxie missing in Turbotville is home safe tonight - TopicsExpress

Hansel, the mini doxie missing in Turbotville is home safe tonight after his 6 day ordeal! And boy is there a story to tell about Hansel. Hansel got out of the fence on Friday evening. I got word and went to meet with the family on Sunday. There had been a sighting Saturday, and they saw Hansel for themselves on Sunday and showed me the spot. We immediately went to work, and got all set up. But there was no sign of Hansel. On Wednesday we got word that he had been seen both Monday night, and Tuesday during the day, and that evening so we once again got our hopes up. We set two traps, in both location where he had been seen, and seemed to have been staying in the area. Still no Hansel showed up. We met today and was going to give it one more night, then we were going to check some other places, and decide whether to set up there. We had checked two abandoned houses by then, and talked to many of the neighbors in the area. I came home in hopes that this would be the night we would finally capture Hansel. I went to my moms for dinner, and a shower and had finished up dinner and got a call from the family. They needed me right away!! They got a call that Hansel was trapped in a barn, and had killed a chicken and was still in there!! They were going to keep him there until I could get there. Could this be Hansel I ask?? He doesnt even have most of his teeth!!! Out the door I went, wet hair, not even combed, and off I went to Turbotville, driving like a mad woman. On the way I had called two friends, and ask them if they thought it really was this little doxie with most of his teeth missing, trapped in that barn, and blamed for killing a chicken?? Could this really be him?? All I knew at this point was I needed to get there, and see what dog this was. I have never captured a lost dog blamed for such a thing!! Least of all a tiny guy with not many teeth!! Hansel is 9 yrs old, and the poor guy was being blamed for such a thing!! I talked myself into thinking, ok, if he is in there, it had to have been a fox who killed the chicken, and Hansel came along and of course was hungry!! I arrived at the barn, and met with his owners. It WAS Hansel trapped in there!! He was cowering in a corner between some round bales of hay, and some fencing. Parts of the fence around the barnyard was open, so I put everyone in position to keep him from running through if he decided to bolt, and under the barn rafters, and into the chicken crap I went. There was Hansel, so scared, peeking out at me, but he wouldnt come out. It was then that the rooster decided to perch above my head, and I looked up and said, please dont poop on my head :) I tried to coax Hansel out but he wouldnt come out for anything. I took a can of chicken breast meat and held it down in there, got him eating as I moved it out further towards me in hopes of loop leashing him. But each time he got close enough, he tucked his head back in, and disappeared his little body deeper. I got his owner to crawl around to the other side, and block that side and I was going to try it a different way, when Hansel decided to make a turn under there, and was now facing the owner. Ok, good!! Now Troy was going to have to learn to loop leash! :) I gave him the leash, and Hansel got himself into it, and we finally had him!!!! Troy picked a very scared Hansel up, and we exited the barn. Poor Hansel. Did this little sweety really kill a chicken? I was still in shock!! Yes, he did kill a chicken, and the rooster decided to go after Hansel and defend the chickens, and thats how he got wedged back in there. He wasnt messing with that rooster!! And thats the very rooster who was perched above my head this whole time, standing guard I guess. Dont worry rooster, we wanted him out of there too! :) We got him loaded up, Troy went to talk to the owners of the barn to explain that he would pay for any livestock, and we took Hansel home, into the garage and left him down. Levi couldnt be here through this, and he is the one bonded with Hansel the most, so they got him on the phone and Levi started talking to Hansel, and Hansel did his howling kinda bark that they told me about. It was music to our ears!! He is full of ticks, and was digging at both ears and rubbing his eyes, so off to the vets he went. Did I mention that there was chicken at both traps!!! While this is kind of comical, I am not making light of the fact that a chicken was harmed in this save. We feel really bad, and the family will try to make this right with the farmers. This really was a first for me, and with such a small dog no less. I want to thank this awesome family for doing everything possible to help bring Hansel home. They went above, and beyond, listened to all advice, and monitored the trap so I wouldnt have to run down there every 3 hrs. Thank you to all the people who called us with sightings, and allowed us to access their land. Thanks to Susie for once again being there to make flyers for me, and Tina for going with me the first night to help set up. Thank you to ALL of you for caring and sharing! Once again another one is home safe tonight, all because of such an awesome village! WELCOME HOME HANSEL!!!
