The Hari- Suriya combo has always been one that guarantees safe returns to the trade but with Singam 2, the duo has managed to outpace their previous ventures and has notched up their biggest hit to date. We present you with the box-office figures from some of the important circuits in the South, to prove Duraisingam’s exploits. Chennai City - At the end of the first week, Singam 2 had grossed more than 4.9 crores according to Behindwoods Chennai box-office analysis and with the second weekend proving to be rocksteady, the movie has crossed the magical 7 crores mark at the end of the first 10 days. It must be noted that a few theaters in the Chengalpet circuit are also being considered in our Chennai Box-office analysis. Other big-budget movies in the recent past such as Vishwaroopam 2, Enthiran and Thuppakki experienced a similarly awesome opening and we have to see how far Singam 2 goes in Chennai City, as Maryan gears up for release on the 19th. Safe to say, the movie will cross the 10 crores mark for sure. Chennai - Total gross at the end of 10 days is 7.21 crores approx NSC (North Arcot, South Arcot and Chengalpet districts) - This is another big circuit when it comes to collections and Singam 2 is a winner here too as the first week gross is 7 crores. It must be noted that screens in the outskirts of Chennai City along the Guindy - Tambaram stretch, come in the Chengalpet circuit. NSC - Total gross at the end of the first week is 7 crores Madurai - A circuit which generally gives a rousing reception to mass masala flicks, Madurai has been welcoming of Singam 2 obviously. The first week gross is 2.6 crores in the City of Temples and Suriya has reasserted his ‘mass hero’ status with this fine run in Madurai. Madurai - Total gross at the end of the first week is 2.6 crores Trichy - The moolah has been handsome in Trichy too as the first week has grossed 2.95 crores. The distributors and exhibitors are a mighty pleased lot. Trichy - Total gross at the end of the first week is 2.95 crores Salem - At the end of the first week, Singam 2’s total gross in the city was around 69 lakhs and after the 2nd weekend, the collections have crossed the dream 1 crore mark and all the stakeholders are thrilled to bits. Salem - Total gross at the end of 10 days is 1 crore plus Kanchipuram - After a slow start due to some uncertainty over the release date and some distribution issues, Singam 2 picked up well and has been met with a rousing response. In 4 main screens - Aruna, Babu, Balaji and Karthikeyan, the movie has grossed an amount of 25 lakhs after the first 10 days. OTHER SOUTHERN STATES Karnataka - The film is doing well here too, over the week after its initial opening weekend. Singam 2 had a huge release all over the state in Tamil & its dubbed Telugu version. It had a wide release in almost 85 screens which is the next highest after Rajinikanth’s Endhiran & Kamal Haasan’s recent blockbuster Vishwaroopam, thanks to the Suriya craze among the youth in the state, where even the dubbed Telugu version titled Singham had opened up in some theaters in the city & in some interior parts of the state. The box-office gross collections for the 1st weekend in the state is around 2 Cr INR & the Distributor share is reported to be 1.47 Cr approx. (note the ET for Tamil films in the state is 30% ). In recent times Singam 2 is one of the biggest Tamil releases in Bangalore city where literally all the multiplexes & popular single screen theaters like Urvashi, Cauvery & Mukunda screened it with more than 4 shows in the 1st weekend & a few continued even on weekdays. The total screen count for both the versions in the city came close to 50 and it is considered a huge count for both the versions getting released on the same day. It also went on to be the 1st Tamil film to get screened at the PVR IMAX screen where usually Hollywood action films are shown. Apart from the huge release at Bangalore city Singam 2 also had a wide release at cities like Mysore, Mangalore where big star cast films usually get a decent release. Singam 2 has also made inroads to certain interior places like Hubli, Chikmagalur, Belgaum and Gulbarga where so far only Kannada & Hindi films have been screened. Thanks to the Karnataka Distributor Bahar Enterprises for having such a wide release, this in turn expands the market for upcoming big budget Tamil films in these circuits. Singam 2 weakens a bit in the 2 nd weekend in Karnataka. The 2 nd weekend saw the number of shows getting dipped and even the occupancy rates were just around 55% - 60% at some of the leading multiplexes due to many films from various languages getting released on the 12th of July. Singam 2 had to face competition from 4 other language biggies which occupied the screens with maximum n.o of shows. The huge release in its opening week made sure the audiences watched the film within the 1 st week itself, at theaters all over the state. Though Singam 2 was able to maintain the same screen count with lesser shows in its 2 nd week it may not have good occupancy during the weekdays as most of them would have seen the film during the 1st week. The repeat audience factor seems to be slightly missing with this film in the 2 nd week. The following week it will have to compete with Dhanush’s Maryan which has had good pre-release reports & ARR’s music has ensured that this film will take a good opening in the coming weekend. Karnataka - Total gross of the Tamil version at the end of 10 days is 3.5 crores approx Andhra Pradesh - Suriya’s Singam 2, released as Singham (Yamudu 2) in Andhra Pradesh, has had a fantastic 1st week for a dubbed film with a wide release. Studio Green took up the distribution for the film in AP and they managed to release it big in 400 theaters all over the state. This film took a flying start in the initial weekend by collecting 6.25 Crores as distributors share & the gross collections came around 10 Crores to be precise. The 1st week distributor’s share for the dubbed version from Andhra and Karnataka is said to 8.75 crores which is a really good number for a dubbed release. It also had to face tough competition from Ravi Teja’s Balupu which released a week before and was declared a Super Hit. This film has been performing extremely well in the B & C centre circuits as mass commercial entertainers are much preferred by the audiences. But the response has been lukewarm in a huge circuit like Nizam due to the Strong Tamil flavour it had. The number of screens for the 2nd week has been reduced to 280 as Sahasam, a big budget action adventure released across the state in more than 400 screens. It is clearly evident that Singham will emerge as Suriya’s biggest grosser in the state beating Yamudu’s lifetime run share of 10.75 crores. So far the highest grosser for Suriya in Andhra has been 7th Sense which took a distributor’s share close to 16.5 crores; this film had a very good pre-release buzz due to Suriya teaming up with AR Murugadoss after Ghajini, which was his 1st hit here. 7th Sense was also made on a much bigger budget, cutting out on the profits. Singam 2 falls in AP in its 2 nd weekend Suriya’s Singham which released last week in around 400 screens had a very successful 1 st week at the Andhra box-office by emerging as a Hit. But the 2 nd weekend saw a fall in number of screens from 400 to 275 due to a straight Telugu film, Sahasam, which released big in around 425 theaters across the state & the word of mouth had been good for the film due its adventure genre. Singham would be collecting around 2.5 Crores (gross 4 Crores) share in its 2 nd weekend. It would also lose many screens in the coming week as another big budget action film OM 3-D, featuring Nandamuri Kalyan Ram, is expected to hit the screens on 19 th July. Andhra Pradesh - Total gross of the Telugu dubbed version is 14 crores and the share is 11.5 - 11.75 crores, at the end of 10 days. Kerala - In Kerala, Singam 2 has grossed around 3.5 crores in its first week and has been declared a Hit thanks to a super opening in 151 screens, which is a new record for Tamil film. The film has been distributed by Sree Kaleeshwari Films, a new player in the Tamil film space in Kerala. But ever since the onset of the Ramadan fasting period, collections have taken a fall in the Malabar area, which is the biggest ‘cash cow’ for Tamil films. Have to see how the second weekend fairs, as collections have started dipping from the first Monday onwards due to the aforementioned fasting period. Kerala - Total gross of the Tamil version at the end of the first week is 3.5 crores approx.
