Happy 1st December everyone! As promised, today marks the start of our Advent Countdown of Festive Dangers. Todays photograph accompanying our post is Darlow - a black Labrador who is looking forward to his first Christmas! Please keep your festive pet photographs coming in. ** CHRISTMAS TREES ** Now December is here, many of us will be starting to think about putting our decorations up at home. While decorations and trees are visually aesthetic and a longstanding tradition, they can present some risks to our pets: • Chemicals or pesticides may have been sprayed onto a live tree, which could pose a risk to your pet if they chew or lick at it. • Pine needles from live trees can injure your pet by piercing or embedding in their paws as they are walked over. If ingested, they have the potential to cause significant damage internally. • Lights can also be visually aesthetic to our pets and they may decide they want to play with them or chew on them. This puts your pet at risk of electrical shock which can cause burns, fluid on the lungs and even death. • Decorations (tinsel, baubles) are also very tempting for our pets and look like toys! These decorations can cause various problems for our pets – including (but not limited to) intestinal obstructions, gastrointestinal upset and oral trauma. Our advice would be to keep your Christmas tree behind closed doors (or safely enclosed) when you are not around to supervise your pet.
