Happy 25th birthday to The Little Mermaid--Its funny, I know that Im supposed to be a little horrified about how Ariel gave up her voice for a boyfriend, and how Disney teaches young women about to how to be buying machines with more boobs than brains, etc. But when I watch this sequence, what I see is beautiful art, and what I hear is the story of a young woman with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, and the desire to know a world completely different than her own. The Little Mermaid showed me a girl who was curious, courageous, and full of conviction. I know its cheesy to love a kids movie so much, but I grew up with Ariel,and I know that The Little Mermaid is why Im the adventurous scientist that I am. So three cheers for the kids movies that define us, and for all the Bright young women/sick of swimmin/ready to stand
