Happy 44th Birthday to Ms. Deborah Debbie Gibson today! A few of you kids out there might be a little too young to remember Ms. Gibson, but in the mid-80s, she was a rising force. She may have battled against Tiffany for the teen queen of the airwaves title, but she was a little more than your average pop star. In 1988, Debbie became the youngest artist to write, produce, and perform a No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, with her song Foolish Beat. This particular song, Only in My Dreams, was written when she was just 14! Basically, she was Taylor Swift about 20 years before Taylor came along, but not only was she writing songs, she was producing as well. A few of you out there might know Debbie more for her acting roles these days. Over the past few years she has been popping up on the Sci-Fi channel Mega Shark and Mega Python movies. She also managed a part in the film adaptation of Rock of Ages with Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti, and Bryan Cranston. For you Ghostbusters fans out there that are celebrating the 30th anniversary rerelease, she also has an uncredited role in that as well. Whether or not she ever returns to the top of the charts remains to be seen, but I doubt that she feels like she has much left to prove anyway.
