Happy 45th Birthday to the Jefferson State Construction and Building Science Technology Department! The origin of the present construction unit can be found in the engineering technology program that began in 1968. It is listed in the 1968-1969 College Catalog as a program in civil engineering and heavy construction. In 1968, a survey was conducted with the Associated Industries of Alabama to determine the needs of industry for graduates of a two-year engineering technology program. The results of the survey initiated the development of a program which allowed students to specialize in either the civil, electronic, or mechanical fields. In 1972, an architectural component was added to the program. During 1976, the Director of the Construction Advancement Program (CAP) of the Associated General Contractors (AGC), approached the Chairman of the Division of Technologies concerning the development of a program to train supervisors in the construction industry. He stated that many people employed in construction in the Birmingham area were not well trained or knowledgeable in the subjects needed to successfully manage a construction project. CAP believed that a training program of this type could best be offered at Jefferson State Junior College. Since state funds were not available at that time to start a new program, CAP and AGC financially supported the program for several years in order to get the program off the ground. The Chairman of the Division of Technologies worked with CAP and the Executive Director of AGC to develop a construction management program. The program was approved by the State Board of Education and began in 1976.
