Happy 4th of July, peeps! Todays selection is Springsteens Star Spangled Banner segue into Born in the USA. A most fitting juxtaposition, methinks, because each country has its glory and shame. We are no different. I love living here, and Im grateful that I do. And then I also have my criticisms and complaints. The older (and hopefully wiser) I grow, I try more and more to express the latter with a sense of love, hope, and optimism for the possibility of good change because I am increasingly believing that the more cynical and pessimistic option is far less useful. (Though you know me - some occasional snark just cant be helped. :P ) I know some people who live here think it witty, urbane and intellectual to take potshots at the US as if there wouldnt be plenty of opportunity to do the same if they lived somewhere else. Me? I was born in another country for which I have appreciation and some affection, but Ive observed and assessed enough to know that Im pretty damned lucky to live here. And though I am far more humanist than nationalist, I love this country, and I wish and hope for nothing but better days ahead for her.
