Happy 80th birthday to the late great Steve Lacy (1934-2004), whom many regard as one of the top three soprano saxophone players of all time. Everyones hands-down #1 is Sidney Bechet - Blue Note Records; many would slot John Coltrane at #2, owing to My Favorite Things, India and other seminal tracks, but Id give it to Lacy, because he specialized in the instrument, and theres nothing like his stuff. Dude released at least 139 albums in a 53-year span, plus another 40 as a sideman, minimum; 17 of these were with pianist Mal Waldron (1925-2002), another boss of that era. Hes probably best-known for his mastery of Thelonious Monks music, and his collaborations with poet Anne Waldman but my favorite thing by him is this version of an old Cecil Taylor tune; I dont know what the video footage is... youtube/watch?v=BT30-CZRaVQ
