Happy Anniversary Air Force !! In 1946, Colonel James R. Cumberpatch, Army Air Force, class of 44 West Point, flew with his B-29 bomber crew UNDER a hurricane to track its progress from Guam to the northwest. Eventually losing an engine after flying 500 feet above the waves for several hours to find the eye, the crew was forced to abandon the hunt and headed by towards the northwest navigating by the seat of their pants, in hopes of finding Japan or the Phillipines. They eventually picked up the locator signal from Manilla in the Phillipines and landed there safely. (This story was delivered at a NOAA Library Brown Bag Seminar in 2005)
