Happy Birthday, Amanda Lo! This is one cool chick. Shes a multi-talented, versatile violinist who works and plays in the NYC area. We first met during the year I worked with the New York Youth Symphony, where she served as Concertmaster. Time has zoomed by since then- as she was gigging in NYC, I headed to Cincinnati for several years, then have been bouncing around the country for the last two. Our paths finally converged again just last weekend, where she played for a little orchestra concert I was conducting! It was fantastic to see and hear her in action again...alas, there was scant time to chat and catch up, as I was juggling lots of items/issues behind the scenes. Each #BirthdayQuest theme comes about in a different way; for Amandas theme, a lush, sweeping soundtrack was in my ear from the get-go. As I started playing around with melodic material, I decided to go back to the first NYYS concert that Amanda was concertmaster for. Both major works on that concert have brief concertmaster features: 6 notes and 4 notes, respectively. These provided great material, though- especially when I discovered that Amandas last name (via my Musical Alphabet Code #1) take the three pitches in the 6-note quote and play them in reverse! Everything fell in to place after that. I did try to squeeze in some more Firebird into this theme, but it sounded a little too forced, and it took away from the sweep and beauty of the theme as a whole. As usual, both quotes are played in their original keys, but their rhythm and surrounding harmonies are different. Check the bottom of the info section on the YouTube page to see what the quotes are. Happy Birthday, Amanda! It was so great to see you last weekend, though lets get together for a real catch-up my next visit to NYC. Hope you enjoy your #BirthdayQuest theme! youtu.be/YNhzkAFaj6E
