Happy Birthday, Dirk Wels! Just a few people with birthdays today, but all of them are cool and talented folks! One has their facebook wall closed, however, which (by rule) makes them ineligible for an official theme. Very happy to be doing a #BirthdayQuest theme for Dirk! Dirk is a fantastic Bassoonist who plays and freelances in the NYC area. Hes the second Bassoon player to be featured in a row, and its the second time that Ive featured back-to-back Bassoonists in the #BirthdayQuest so far. We first got to meet and work together last year in January- hes a wonderful and sensitive musician, and a great guy as well. Ive got no doubt well be doing many more collaborations in the future! The concert we played together last year was a concerto concert, so for Dirks #BirthdayQuest theme, I decided to quote a Bassoon excerpt from a concerto (of sorts) which happens to be one of the most prominent Bassoon features in the entire orchestral repertory. As usual, the quote is played in its original key, but its rhythm and surrounding harmonies are different. Check the bottom of the info section on the YouTube page to see what quotes I used.
