Happy Birthday to Capt. Jim Lovell, veteran astronaut of the Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8 and Apollo 13 missions. During Gemini, Jim got to spend many days in a telephone booth-sized cockpit with first Frank Borman and then Buzz Aldrin. It is rumored that Deke Slayton chose Jim for these flights because of his easy-going nature. While I admire many things about Jim, his heroism being in close-quarters with Borman and Aldrin on these two flights is under-estimated. Jim was among the first to leave Earth on Apollo 8, and on Apollo 13 his leadership is well known. How many guys can say they were played by Tom Hanks? Jim was the Chairman of ASF for a while and I had the privilege of meeting him at a number of events, including this November 2012 dinner at his restaurant.
