Happy Birthday to Peter Pears, one of the twentieth centurys - TopicsExpress

Happy Birthday to Peter Pears, one of the twentieth centurys greatest tenors and a glorious interpreter of Benjamin Brittens resplendent, exacting, sublime music! (Pears was Brittens partner for the better part of forty years and almost all of the tenor rôles in Brittens operas were written for him, among them Quint in the The Turn of the Screw, Vere in Billy Budd, and, perhaps most notably, the eponymous antihero Peter Grimes.) Happy Birthday, too, to the great British character actress Prunella Scales, whose performance as Sybil Fawlty on Fawlty Towers was actually surpassed by her performance on Mapp and Lucia, the series based on the funniest Edwardian cycle of novels ever written. E.F. Benson himself would have approved of her uproarious turn as Miss Mapp! (HB, too, to Meryl Streep and Billy Wilder! Ill let Jon Darby take care of Dan Brown.)
