Happy Birthday to ROBERT REDFORD! Shown in this five-minute, totally uncut clip from his shoot for RICK MCKAYS BROADWAY: THE GOLDEN AGE FILM TRILOGY, the legendary actor/director Robert Redford shares with producer/director Rick McKay the story of his first job in show business. Interesting enough, there is a direct link between that first job and an award-winning film he would direct some 40 years later. Redford began his career in NYC, working on the Broadway stage. He starred on Broadway in THE HIGHEST TREE, SUNDAY IN NEW YORK, BAREFOOT IN THE PARK, LITTLE MOON OF ALBAN and TALL STORY - all before ever going to Hollywood to work in film. One of the most intelligent and interesting men I have met shooting over 300 legendary actors, Redford is also incredibly charming and makes you want to listen to him tell stories for days. We were supposed to shoot for 15 minutes and instead did over an hour and a half. If there was not a film crew waiting outside to film him for a bonus feature on a DVD, who knows how long we would have talked? I was very flattered at the end of our shoot when he told me there were like five people outside in the DVD crew, and that he was impressed I had done the first film of the trilogy basically without any crew. He told me he had heard about my technique and that he and some of the other folks in his production office had had a friendly bet on how many people would REALLY be in my crew when I came to shoot that day. I asked him how many people he thought. Well, he said. Lets just say I lost. And I am impressed. I have a feeling that is why he chose to regale me with stories of his early days in New York City for so long, knowing that I would love it. He also told me he loved Broadway: The Golden Age, and being a filmmaker, was giving me exactly what I wanted for the new film - and more! youtu.be/tg-e_2qCyi4 But, whatever the reason, it was precious time with a great director, actor and human being. Happiest of Birthdays Bob - you are the best!
